Shoutcast is alive and well. I ran my station Highway 94 Radio for years on it until recently when I made the move to Icecast2. Both platforms are good for hosting your own and statighforward in getting started, even in Linux.

Was it a license thing? Can you still get free shoutcast for Linux?

Shoutcast is still free, as well as IceCast. There are not charges for license, broadcasting, etc. I wanted to change the base of where the show was listed. Shoucast/IceCast in Linux us very easy to install and maintain. I use Mixx to broadcast to the Icecast server. Most of the configuration work can be completed via CLI for the config files, but the newer versions bascially walk you through setting it up.

Yeah, I did that for quite some time. I always had an issue with WinAmp shutting down sporadically or dropping the connection to the source. After going back and forth for a bit and doing some research, I decided to use Mixx. I have a few friends that also broadcast with WinAmp with the ShoutCast plugin that have no issues at all and never had since they started broadcasting.

I do like how easy the integration is with WinAmp and the Shoutcast plugin and that both are still updated and supported.

winamp has been sold atleast twice. i dont really trust whoever is running it now. i'm pretty sure their support and updates are poor at this time.

regarding it dropping, that's a good thing but it's annoying. it is showing your server has some issue. you might be getting attacked or it cant handle the bandwidth. i've had it happen to me and when i investigated i had a lot of bogus connections from attackers.

oh i tried this version out and it seemed nice.

it had issues with shoutcast , showing my actual directory path in the filename being broadcasted so i wasn't happy with that.

okay i'm trying out mixx tonight and it's been over a half an hour and it's still scanning my music library. my directory is about 600gigs.
no progress report on the %, just says scanning. it's not locked up.

so far not happy with that part.

Yeah, so Mixx can be tempermental at some times, especially on Windows versions of the applcation. I run it on Linux Mint and on occasion have noticed that it has stopped playing the playlist, which can be annoying. I am sure since you have over 600GB of music, that may be why it appears to hang up as it has to build that library. I know I am repsonding a little late to this post, but I hoped it eventually worked for you and were able to play around to test. Mixx is not a bad broadcast/live/replay software, but it is also not the best. At leats for me it doesn't error out and stop playing altogether like WinAmp did for me, with both version (Windows/Linux). I do agree with you MRO that I as well do not trust the new developer of the WinAmp software, mostly due to the fact that the ShoutCast plugin versions has had some issues with the WinAmp software itself.

Take care and I hope you are having a good week!

well now i am running WACUP, which is made by an old developer of the new winamp. it works pretty good for shoutcasting and it's feature rich.
i also dont have disconnecting probs with it. i had issues with disconnects popup recently.

    Good morning,

yeah, this was a similiar issue and why I switched over to IceCast and Mixx. Mixx will work with Shoutcast as well, but thought I would try something different. Also, I run the radio server under Linux Mint and there is a ton of information on how to get it working, pretty straight forward.

I ran ShoutCast for years using WinAmp, and although WinAmp released a newer non support version, I still continued to have issues. Mixx is not a bad piece of software (free) once you get used to it. Let me know if you need documentation on the steup and i will be more than happy to share.

    Thank you,

Yeah, I run WinAMP all day while I'm working on my desktop, and it
